Winter, 1981 - est. 1980

interview cont'd

What were your feelings when the Beatles rumor reached you and you watched the incredible rate and depth to which it spread?

We were so involved in making Hope that we did not feel the full effect at the time, but we were flattered all the same, just as we were when Richard and Karen Carpenter recorded "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft."

Your personal representative, Frank Davies, was quoted in Rolling Stone denying any Beatle connections. Why did the rumors not stop at that in your opinion?

People believe what they want to believe.

How about all the circumstantial evidence, the clues, multitudes of which seemed unarguably planned?

Total coincidence. There's no way you could plant all those clues.

Were you tempted to make yourselves public there and then or did you want to ride with the very entity that was bringing you success?

Like true sailors, nothing would have changed our original course. We certainly wouldn't blow our cover because some people insisted we were lying. Yes, we rode with the success and enjoyed it. It gave us great inspiration to continue recording.

What are your current plans and what can we expect from Klaatu in the future?

We spent the later part of 1980 in pre-production, that is writing new material and making demos. We now have more than enough material to allow us to go into the studio to begin our fifth album. As a matter of fact we hope to start recording in early February.

You said the Endangered Species album was kept basic partly for stage reproduction. Will the new album follow that trend and possibly culminate in a live performance?

The simplicity of our previous album will be retained to some extent because we consider live performance an important part of our future. We hope to put together a Canadian tour concurrent with the release of our new project. On the other hand, there will be songs on the album more reminiscent of our early recordings in terms of production and arrangements.

KLAATU's album joins Supertramp's "Crime of the Century", Fleetwood Mac's self titled L.P., Steely Dan's "Aja", and George Benson's "Breezin" among others as one of the best engineered and produced records ever released in the opinion of Mobile Fidelity the California company that uses JVC Cutting Center to master these special albums.

KUOTABLE KUOTES AND KLIPPINGS by Frank Davies

KLAATU's albums have been best sellers in Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand, Austria, Finland and Norway as well as Canada, The United States. Recently KLAATU has also had best sellers in Brazil and Mexico, Guatemala and Puerto Rico.

KLAATU have numerous GOLD ALBUM awards including Canada (3:47 EST and Hope - which are now both close to Platinum) and Australia ("KLAATU").

KLAATU's half-hour fully animated TV special was recently completed in Los Angeles by renowned Canadian Animators Al Guest and Jean Mathieson. The special is titled "Happy New Year Planet Earth' and features music from KLAATU's 3:47 EST and "Sir Army Suit" albums. As a matter of interest and fact Canadian animators have walked off with the Oscars for the best animation for the last two years in the United States. Dependent upon the success of "Happy New Year Planet Earth" the two producers would like to produce a one hour special again fully animated on the KLAATU album "HOPE". I will keep you advised about airings of the half hour special as and when negotiations are completed. You may have seen a three minute excerpt from this special on several editions of Don Kirshner's "Midnight Special". The excerpt was featuring the song 'Routine Day'.

KLAATU's music has also been the subject of two short video films produced in Holland to the songs - 'We're off you know' and 'Hope'.

KLAATU have only ever made one public appearance. It was on a Canadian TV show called "Music Machine" in 1975. KLAATU performed 'California Jam' and 'True Life Hero' for this CBC Special. Videotapes of just this one show have been lost with no explanation given!

A lot of you have enquired about the artwork on our albums. It gives us great pleasure to introduce Ted Jones, artiste extraordinaire.

Hi! and thanks for the positive feedback. I hope you have enjoyed the artwork as much as I have creating it.

I consider myself a permanent art student who began studies at Vanier Collegiate in Toronto. The graphics industry has been my source of survival and I specialize in packaging. A keen interest in fine art and it's presentation has enabled me to work exclusively on KLAATU LP covers. I have tried to visualize the musical concepts of KLAATU through various media - for instance, the grandiosity of the "Hope" album had to be delivered in oils, while "Endangered Species" cover combined water colours, inks and egg tempra. Below is a photograph of myself and one of my earlier experiments "The Sun Goddess". picture of Ted Jones and his Sun Goddess
